Which batteries are suitable for wheelchairs?

In the wheelchair battery category, we have compiled a list of lead-acid batteries and rechargeable batteries that are optimized for cyclical operation. Such applications are characterized by the fact that the energy store is regularly discharged and recharged. This is the case with electrically powered wheelchairs: When driving, the battery discharges and must then be fully charged again. In this respect, the batteries for wheelchairs are no different from electric vehicle batteries.

Wheelchair with battery

AGM or GEL batteries are best suited for electric wheelchairs. Both are lead-acid batteries. In AGM batteries, the acid is bound in glass fiber mats, while silicic acid is used in GEL batteries. Both variants are maintenance-free and can be used in any position. They also have a long service life with very many charging and discharging cycles without any loss of performance. Wheelchair batteries therefore provide reliable energy and ensure your mobility!

All the advantages of wheelchair batteries at a glance

  • Cycle-proof
  • maintenance-free
  • leak-proof
  • independent of position
  • reliable
  • robust
  • vibration-protected
  • long service life
  • low self-discharge
  • Minimal power loss

What is cycle stability?

The cycle stability is very important for a long life expectancy of the wheelchair battery. It indicates how often a battery can be discharged and then recharged without a loss of capacity. A high cycle stability value therefore stands for a long service life. However, the depth of discharge of the battery must be taken into account in order to classify the information correctly.

An example: The manufacturer specifies a life expectancy of 1500 cycles for a wheelchair battery. This means that the energy storage device can be completely discharged and recharged 1500 times before a loss of capacity occurs. However, deep discharging is neither common nor sensible in everyday life. If you only discharge the wheelchair battery to 50 percent of its capacity and then charge it, the service life doubles to 3000 cycles.

Charging the wheelchair battery correctly

To ensure that your new wheelchair battery lasts a long time, follow the general basic rules for handling AGM and GEL lead batteries:

  • Deep discharging still damages even a battery with contemporary technology. Even if modern power wheelchairs are often already technically protected against deep discharge, you should make sure that the battery is never completely discharged When you are not using your wheelchair, for example in the cold winter months, it makes sense to fully charge or recharge the wheelchair battery every six to eight weeks.
  • Get into the habit of recharging the wheelchair battery after every use so that your mobility aid is always ready for use - preferably overnight. It is also necessary to connect the new wheelchair battery to the charger before the very first journey and ideally charge the energy storage unit for 24 hours or longer.
  • Choosing the right charger is also crucial. An incorrect or unsuitable battery charger can significantly reduce the service life of your wheelchair battery. We will be happy to advise you on this!
