Backup batteries are also known as additional batteries or back-up batteries. They are suitable wherever vehicles are equipped with a large number of electrical consumers, automatic start/stop systems, brake energy recovery and the like. This means that installation always makes sense if a large amount of power has to be provided over a longer period of time to maintain all functions, which is the case with most modern mid-range and luxury cars, or if you want to operate these extras when the engine is switched off. Backup batteries are also often recommended in the field of hi-fi tuning when large hi-fi audio systems with amplifiers and bass rollers are retrofitted in the vehicle, which have a high power requirement.

The backup battery is the perfect back-up for your starter battery to support it if necessary, as it is also characterized by very high cold start currents and thus ensures that your modern equipped car starts without problems even in winter and at permanently low temperatures.

The battery control unit regulates when an additional supply from the back-up battery is required, either by disconnecting the back-up battery from the starter battery via an isolating relay or by connecting it in parallel if necessary. The cut-off relay also prevents the starter battery and the backup battery from discharging each other.
